It's been a while since I've thrown something other than stills up here. Lately, I've been so immersed in shutterbugging that I've managed to space on looping any of you into any moving images. Tea in hand, here's one I stumbled across while lurking on the web. I really enjoy the way it's shot... let alone surfed. Pulled back. Balanced. It's easy to see that King Ke11y is a freak. Sure, the novelty of annoucing his 11th world title may be over, but I'm not a surfing magazine and his backhand abilities boggle my mind so much that it deserves a look no matter the month. I love the carving 3 @1:19. You can tell he's having way too much fun on a wave famed for rattling even the most season slider's cage. Typical.

I have a confession to make. I've developed a rather strange love affair with San Francisco- big surprise right? Despite having been just a handful of times, each trip up manages to make yet another dent in this self-proclaimed heart of stone. This July, I had the good fortune of fleeing my normal routine for a couple days. Per usual, I brought my beloved camera and managed to spend a couple moments behind its newest lens- a delicious Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Prime.

Normally, I tend to stray from shooting video since I've yet to fully commit to learning all its ins and outs. But thanks in part to a couple cold Anchor Steams, beautifully talented friends and gorgeous lighting, I felt compelled to give it a whirl.

It's safe to say this one happened more or less by accident. After a series of conversations & catching-ups with my friend Kelly- who had coincidentally made a similar solo trip two weeks later- we got inspired to combine our individual footage and forces into one short. The only goal: make something out of somethings.

We've decided to call it Part One because we had way too much fun not to leave it open-ended. You know, just in case more of that 'deus ex machina' stuff lands in our laps.

Too many us take so many things for granted.

Last weekend I was was fortunate enough to play spectator at an amputee rock-climbing and bouldering clinic in Joshua Tree. Attending the event had to be one of the most eye-opening experiences I've had in a while-- and I didn't even climb.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to lose a limb. The physical part of is just sounds other worldly. But factoring in the mental side of things is what really boggled my brain. My head spun all afternoon thinking about what it would be like to lose one's confidence post-amputation then have the "Shit, I can do this" epiphany. It pretty much just left me scratching my head... and I consider myself luck to do just that.

Appreciate your limbs and use them to the fullest. Why? Because you never know.

The other day, I remembered just how badly I had neglected two rolls of 35mm film that were shot back in February on a little island called, "Hawai'i".

It's officially April now... and until this afternoon, I had yet do anything with productive with them. The two rolls, complete in their little opaque canisters, sat patiently on my dresser just begging to be enjoyed.

Dumbfounded and frustrated with my absent-mindedness, I apologized to both of the rolls individually and took them to be developed- in print and digital form.

On the trip, I was eager to take a stab in the dark at a more traditional (and challenging) means of documentation- a janky Diana F+. The thought of tinkering with something foreign in nature added a new, unknown element to the equation. I can honestly say, I had (pretty much) no idea what I was doing... but what the hell. That didn't make it any less fun.

I always dreamt of seeing the North Shore live up to its wintery name in person. But what surf-stoked human worth his or her weight in salt hasn't? All the hype. All the stories. All the legends. I've grown up with posters of these waves on my walls, videos of my idols conquering water mountains in my VCRs, wrinkled magazine clippings stuffed into every drawer I've ever owned- you name it- but, until this trip, I hadn't yet seen it for my own eyes.

This trip, the Seven Mile Miracle did nothing short of shake me and my expectations. With shifty weather, uncharacteristically abismal winds and the occasional rogue set, the place put on quite the show. I consider myself lucky to have witnessed it in full effect. Donavon Frankenreiter has been a huge influence on me for as long as I can remember. Since day one of my immersion in the world of surfing, I've found Donny's schtick (both in the water and out) completely inspiring. He just makes me want to be my own human, create my own niches and have fun with my surfing.

Çøleman says... drink møre good beer, you ______. i cant remember for the life of me what he's holding... knowing this kid and his tendencies... im going with Arrøgant Båstard. you'd think they nåmed this brew after him with that smug fåce he's flashin,,, what håm. he'll prøbably be the first one to look at this too,,, say something like "You ass." Cølemån used tø dabble in a little bløggin himself... over at Physics Meets Running,,, but his last post was in was in July- (tra√esty). so this is me cålling him out and driving whatever traffic i çan to his neglected presence on the w∑b. Pressüre's on køok.
